How renting works
Borrowing from someone nearby instead of buying. Here's how it works, start to finish.
The short version
- Pick your days on the listing and send a request with a short message. You add a card, but nothing is charged yet.
- The lender replies. You can chat and ask anything before they decide.
- They accept, and you're booked. That's when your card is charged, and the days are yours.
- Sort out pick-up in the chat. They share where to find them.
- Use it, clean it, give it back by your last day.
Sending a request
Choose the pick-up day and the return day in the calendar. Days count inclusively: pick up Thursday and return Saturday is 3 days. A request can be up to 30 days. Greyed-out days are already booked by someone else.
Your message goes to the lender with the request: say hi, what you'll use it for and when suits you to pick it up.
A request doesn't hold the days. If the lender accepts someone else for the same days first, yours can't go ahead. If they don't answer before your first day, the request expires. Either way, you're not charged.
When you're charged
Only when the lender accepts. Until then your card is saved, not charged, and you can withdraw the request any time. More about payments.
If your payment doesn't go through
Sometimes the card is declined when the lender accepts, or your bank wants you to confirm the payment. The booking page then asks you to pay. The days stay held for you until you do, but the lender can call it off if you don't. Why this happens.
Chatting with the lender
Every request has its own chat on the booking page. We email you when the other person writes, so you don't have to keep checking.
Keep the conversation on Grannen. If something goes wrong, the chat is what we look at to help sort it out.
During the rental
- Treat it like you'd want your own gear treated.
- Read the “Good to know” tips on the listing, and ask the lender how it works at pick-up.
- Give it back clean, on time and with everything it came with.
- If something breaks, tell the lender straight away in the chat. Being upfront goes a long way. How damage cover works.
Signing in
There are no passwords. Type your email and we send you a 6-digit code that works for 10 minutes. New here works the same way: your account is made the first time you sign in.
- No code? Check your spam folder, or ask for a new one on the sign-in page.
- After 3 wrong tries a code stops working; ask for a new one.
- You stay signed in on that device for 30 days.
